The classic hardtail design has been around forever, so to avoid getting bored, we've decided to totally tip the cross country world on its head. The new S-Works Epic Hardtail is not only the lightest mountain frame we've ever made, it's our lightest frame ever.
Cross country racing has come a long way, the past decade seeing the sport evolve into a completely different beast all together. Thrill seekers are starting to design the courses, opting for rowdier and more technical routes inherently changing the name of the game. The ultimate' cross country racing bike has therefore changed somewhat and we've had to adapt accordingly.
The result is a bike that is not only lightweight and stiff, but also a beast on the climbs and descents. To find the best geometry to fit this new style of cross country racing we needed only to look to our current XC race geo, throwing in some added trail DNA into the mix for good measure. A longer top tube, shortened head tube and a slacked out front end were just some of the trail features thrown in, this trio increasing the downhill stability of the bike massively not to mention accommodate a wider fit range. None of these downhill features affected the bike's climbing proficiency, but we were forced to put a little more thought into the weight aspect of the bike. How did we do it Well, when you rally a team of the best mountain bike engineers into one room, the ideas soon come pouring out.
We originally thought the only two ways to cut frame weight were to use less of the same grade carbon, or use less of a higher-grade carbon. While we did cut a little of the higher-grade carbon, our biggest weight savings came from looking into our layup schedules and analysing how they could be improved. This led us to a new, revolutionary discovery Rider First EngineeredTM frame technology. This new technology ensures that each size has the same, sublime ride quality no matter the size of frame you choose, while also reducing weight by cutting layup inefficiencies.
With this new layup discovery, each frame now features complex cut carbon plys that reduce overlap between covered junctions. This makes for a much lighter frame, stronger junctions and a massive increase in overall frame stiffness. You'd think the weight savings would stop there, but we continued to pursue the dream of making our lightest frame to date. By using Japanese military ballistic-grade carbon, which we now call 12m, the lightest mountain bike we've ever made was soon born a dainty 900 grams for a size large frame.
No expense was spared in completing the rest of the S-Works Epic Hardtail bike, only the best components completing the stunning setup. With a custom RockShox SID World Cup fork with Brain, SRAM XX1 EagleTM 12-speed shifting, SRAM Level Ultimate hydraulic disc brakes, and a pair of hand-built Roval Control SL carbon wheels, this is not only a bike to dominate the cross country racing scene, it's a bike to turn it completely on its head.
